20 Best business opportunities to do in Tanzania

business opportunities in Tanzania

Tanzania has a lot of opportunities for the entrepreneurs to invest, Once she is known mainly for Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, Tanzania is seeing a change in balance between the number of tourists and investors coming to the country. Driving from the airport, my taxi driver explains how he used to see more backpacks and sleeping bags but now briefcases and laptops are more common in this country.
The following are the business opportunities which is more applicable in Tanzania.

1.Telecom and ICT

The potential in telecom and ICT in Tanzania remains largely untapped. But the potential is too great to ignore and movement in the sector has already showed that the country is on the right track. There is the high demand in rural areas in Tanzania where the infrastructure are not well set.

2.Energy (Excluding Oil & Gas)

Electricity prices are a different story. Prices can reach 27 to 29 cents per kilowatt-hour during peak hours in the capital, Dar es Salaam. Independent contractors produce great returns in a starving energy environment. Prices will drop, but at even half their price today, they will be attractive to international investors, says a former Blackstone executive, though understanding the dynamics of Tanzania’s regional politics can be a hurdle. But energy always involves politics in or outside of Africa. Tanzania simply offers higher returns at the moment.

3. Create a customer service app

Tanzania unfortunately suffers from a ‘bad customer service crisis’. So why not find a way to make businesses accountable to training their staff by creating an app where people can rate businesses in different industries based on the customer service they provide?

4. Skills sharing app and website
Many businesses and professionals in Tanzania struggle to find competent and skilled employees in short notice. So, someone could create an app where professionals can publicly post their resumes, portfolios and rates, and people can contact them for short-term gigs and freelance opportunities. Similar websites exist in countries like the U.S. and India, however, it would be beneficial to create one that is tailored to the needs of Tanzanian businesses.

5. Food truck

Instead of a stationary restaurant, why not have a food truck that moves around places where there are a lot of businesses and offers cheap and delicious meals at affordable prices during lunch hours?

6.Publication for expat community
Cities like Arusha,Mwanza and Dar es Salaam have always had a lot of expats, but there are few publications and websites dedicated to addressing their daily struggles and interests in their new homes. So, why not start a publication, in the expat community’s language that does just this. There are a couple of Chinese newsletters in Dar es Salaam that highlight Chinese businesses and services in Mandarin, and they seem to be doing pretty well.

7.24-hour car repair service
The unfortunate thing about car breakdowns is that they can’t be scheduled to a time that’s convenient for you. They can literally happen at any time, and sometimes it’s difficult to find someone to help you (for instance if your vehicle breaks down at 2Am in the morning). So, imagine if people were able to call a car repair service or mechanic at any hour? Sounds like a recipe for success.

8. Local dating app
Almost everyone loves romance and as a result dating apps like Tinder and Cupid are incredibly popular worldwide, so why not create one that meets the specific needs of people in Tanzania? It could include categories like ‘interested in marriage’ and ‘religious views’ among other localized ideals.
9. Community office space
There are more and more people with flexible work schedules or who are venturing out and launching their own businesses and working from coffee shops and restaurants during the day. As a result, there’s definitely a need in the market for office spaces that people can rent out on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis and provide a desk, internet service, printer, storage space, and even coffee. This gives people who work for themselves a sense of community while allowing them to maintain their flexible work lifestyle.

10.Affordable solar power company
If you have the capital and business expertise, then it is wise to invest in the solar energy industry in Tanzania. While there are a couple of companies effectively offering solar power solutions to Tanzanians, the industry is not saturated and still has room for new competitors. The trick would be to provide low cost and accessible solar power to Tanzanians of medium income

11.Real Estate
The energy industry, and an overall growing interest in Tanzania, drives this sector. A short business stay in Dar es Salaam for $150 per night will feel like a steal. Buying property is also becoming a growing headache for locals as prices skyrocket. Foreign investors are growingly becoming interested by real estate plays in a market nowhere near its ceiling

12.Logistics & Warehousing
Tanzania’s roads and railways are not the best in the region,Roads and railways are the key to improving distribution and life in Tanzania and to broadening regional integration,The growing improvement in roads and railways across East Africa opens opportunities for logistics in a country where urbanization stands at about 30 percent, and many farms operate at a significant distance from the ports in Dar es Salaam. Fuel and electricity prices have undermined logistics and warehousing generally in Africa, but the changing dynamics around these two factors in Tanzania in the near future should boost returns.

13.Agribusiness

Food consumption in Tanzania is a disturbing story. But it speaks to the great potential for the agribusiness sector. According to the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), 70 percent of caloric intake requirements of low and middle-income households are met by street food. Street vendors offer some of the best, juicy fruit in Africa, especially the pineapple, says Nala, a local financial advisor, but locals typically buy sodas and small candies. Nala is not wrong. Street vendors provided my nourishment while hopping from meeting to meeting.

As mentioned before, there a rarely any new ideas, instead, people just come up with better ways of doing things. So, whether you are passionate about ice cream, tech, or education, you have to make sure it fills a gap in the market and is relevant to the needs of Tanzanian consumers. However, if you really don’t have a particular venture in mind, then adapt one of these business ideas and thank us later.
